How I healed my IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

1 in 6 people suffer from IBS. According to Google, it’s an intestinal disorder that causes pain in the abdomen, gas, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. It affects millions of people each year and symptoms are “managed” but not cured with “treatment”. Most doctors end up prescribing laxatives,  stool softeners and diarrhea pills.

I was diagnosed with IBS in the summer of 2012. Luckily, the emergency room doctor that diagnosed me said these words that stuck with me, “If you don’t change your diet, you won’t get any better”. At that time I was experiencing pain in my stomach daily, specifically after I ate. I only pooped at that time maybe twice a week and I wasn’t eating healthy nor exercising. My body was so toxic!

What causes IBS?

There is no “one cure” for anyone although there was one particular thing that stood out for me! That’s the thing about health issues, there are usually many factors contributing to symptoms. For some it may be stress related. For others, it may be inflammation from gluten, food allergies, parasites causing holes in the intestines ie. leaky gut or an imbalance in gut bacteria restricting proper digestion.

How I Healed myself of IBS!

RAW Ginger juice, my miracle potion! Before I changed my diet and before I tried anything else, this one root vegetable knocked out every IBS symptom I’ve ever experienced. Like, the same day within minutes after drinking it. Unbelievable!

Eventually I started eating clean and eliminating foods that would trigger my IBS. Acidity in the body is a happy home for yeast and unhealthy bacteria causing sickness and inflammation. I started drinking Apple cider vinegar mixed with water first thing in the morning to balance my PH level. Then I would have a green smoothie, containing everything under the sun (ie. superfoods). Those superfoods and the fiber from the fruits and vegetables I was missing previously made it easier for me to have bowel movements. I was no longer constipated and pooping daily, sometimes twice a day. My favorite spices included in my smoothies were turmeric for inflammation, cinnamon for its antibacterial properties, and honey which is a prebiotic. Prebiotics feed probiotics, the healthy gut bacterias. Sauerkraut is my favorite probiotic! I switched over from white breads and pastas to organic whole wheat and grains. I’ve completely stopped drinking soda and eating fried, artificial processed foods as well.

Essentially, changing your diet is key to healing IBS. It wasn’t overnight but a continuous effort to healing.

Peace, <3, & Wellness.
